Cuomo: Major Highways May Shut Down Ahead of Storm

Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned of possible road closures ahead of an approaching blizzard.

Those roads may include the NYS Thruway I-87, Interstate 84, Interstate 684 and state parkways, Cuomo said during a conference call Wednesday afternoon.

"Knowing the potential impact of this winter storm, combined with plummeting temperatures, I have activated the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response efforts,” said Cuomo. “Blowing, drifting snow can make travel difficult and dangerous, so I urge citizens to exercise caution if they have to leave their homes. We recommend that everyone in potentially affected areas utilize mass transit and take steps to safeguard against frigid temperatures. Keep a close eye on the weather, follow any instructions issued by local emergency officials, and check on your neighbors and family members.”

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Friday, for Rockland, Putnam and Westchester counties.

The brunt of the storm will start Thursday evening, with 4-10 inches falling through Friday morning.

Winds of 10 to 25 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph will reduce visibility on the roadways. Extreme cold temperatures are coming along with the storm, with wind chills making it feel like 15 degrees below zero Thursday night into Friday.

Heavy snow and plunging temperatures will make driving difficult and could affect snow plowing operations, the NWS said.

"Do not travel," the NWS said in its warning. "If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you."
