Local Cancer Survivors Show Their Spirit

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, cancer survivors and Lawrence Hospital Center’s Cancer Care Team hit the catwalk to help raise money for the hospital’s Cancer Survivorship Program. Hundreds of people attended the Thursday night event at the Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester.

“The event was a very special night for my wife and I, not only because it was a significant evening for the hospital, but because my wife, Betty, is a breast cancer survivor,” said Dr. Anthony Provenzano, director of oncology services and chief of medical oncology at Lawrence Hospital Center.

More than $7,000 was raised at the event, which was co-sponsored by Lord & Taylor of Ridge Hill. Also sponsoring the event was Lawrence Hospital Center’s Spirit of Women Network, a group which encourages women to make positive changes in their lives by focusing on their total well-being, mind, body and spirit.

“Now that people saw how supportive Lawrence Hospital is, and how focused they are on women’s health, they see that there is an amazing group out there that is in place to help them,” said cancer survivor and event organizer Jean Colicci, a Spirit of Women member. “Working on this event for Lawrence Hospital was very special. For me, as a survivor, I feel being involved helped me heal more quickly.”
