Bronx Nursing Home Gold Crest Care Center Highlights its Outstanding Dietary Department During March National Nutrition Month

Bronx area nursing home Gold Crest Care Center supports March National Nutrition Month

Bronx, NY (March 2014) March is National Nutrition Month, an observance that is widely overlooked, yet universally important to every member of our society. As people age, nutrition becomes more important to overall health, especially in regards to the elderly population. Proper diet and nutrition helps elderly individuals keep their minds sharp and alert, while also increasing energy. However, the elderly have different needs than the rest of the population, which is why Gold Crest Care Center of the Bronx, New York, would like to share helpful tips about maintaining a healthy diet after the age of 50.

  • Use less salt! Reduce your sodium intake to reduce water retention and high blood pressure.

  • Eat more veggies! The best way to prepare vegetables is by steaming or sautéing them in olive oil. Olive oil preserves nutrients and is a great example of the good fats doctors recommend.

  • Diversify your plate! A helpful tip from Japanese food culture is to include five colors on your plate. Fruits and veggies rich in color correspond to rich nutrients (blackberries, melons, yams, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini).

  • “Our dietary department is a crucial aspect of our operations here at Gold Crest Care Center and we take great pride in the food we make here.
