2013 Friends of the Scarsdale Library Adult and Teen Spelling Bee.

The fourth annual Friends of the Scarsdale Library Spelling Bee will entertain the community on Friday, January 31 at 7:30 PM at the Scarsdale High School Auditorium (Brewster Road entrance).  The snow date is February 28.  All are invited to cheer their favorite teams and to participate in interactive trivia games, a silent auction, and raffles while supporting the Library. Music and the emceeing of Ed Coleman, the radio voice of the New York Mets, will add to the festivities.

Amongst the twenty teams, five teams of teenagers will strive to win the grand prize and bragging rights as Scarsdale’s best spellers.  Viveka Kymal, who has made the Bee’s final round twice with teammates Maleeha Chida and Malika Lawrence, notes that, “It’s a lot of fun to do with friends and a great way for us to get involved in the community.”  See the Friends of the Scarsdale Library website for a full listing of participants.

Featured silent auction items include a TestTakers SAT prep course valued at $2,195, a 64GB iPad Air valued at $890, a Skin TheraP package worth $675, and John Hardy earrings valued at $395.  Raffle prizes include goodies from the Rachele Rose Day Spa, classes at SoulCycle, Yoga Station, Fly Gym, and Steve Sohn's Jujitsu Concepts, baskets of children’s games, a Tiffany glass box, and more.  The doors open at 6:45 PM.

The Friends are grateful for the generous support of the Spelling Bee’s sponsors.  The Platinum sponsor is Thomson Reuters.  Diamond Level sponsors are Mercedes-Benz of White Plains, Paul Hastings LLP, and Sara and Richard Werder.  At the Gold Level, sponsors include Country Bank, Houlihan Lawrence, Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, Drs. Renu and Anil Lalwani, and Margaret and Larry Smith. Anyone can be a “Friend of the Bee” by making a donation of any amount.  A donation form is available at the Friends of the Library website.

Admission to the Spelling Bee is $5, and refreshments will be available for purchase.  Cash and checks will be accepted for raffles and silent auction bids.

About The Scarsdale Public Library

The Scarsdale Public Library serves a central role in the cultural and intellectual life of the Scarsdale community and encourages the joy of reading, the exploration of ideas and the pursuit of lifelong learning for children and adults. The Library offers print and electronic books, magazine, music, films, audio books and online resources; provides accurate and timely information in person, by telephone and email; and in collaboration with other local organizations, gathers and preserves local history information; presents programs that appeal to all ages and interests; and sponsors a wide variety of cultural events. The sixth busiest library in Westchester County, circulating nearly 133 items per hour, it is also a destination for computer use. In 2011, the public access computers were used more than 32,000 times, and its WiFi network supported almost 20,000 sessions from users of laptops and other wireless devices. During the first half of the 2011-2012 fiscal year, Scarsdale residents downloaded over 2,500 e-books.
