Going green can often help sell a home more quickly.
Many households still tend to shy away from adopting green living habits for fear they’ll be too hard, time-consuming, or expensive. In reality, there are many green habits that are easy, inexpensive, and will help you sell your home faster. Cutting down on energy usage is often a great way to save money. Do you know that many buyers today will ask a seller how much they pay each month on their utilities? Some might even go so far as to ask for copies of the homeowners utility bills. In order to make this often large amount of money seem more reasonable, going green can help. Consider “greening” up your appliances. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, getting rid of old and outdated appliances can save thousands of dollars per…

The public duked it out at Thursday night's long and heated forum surrounding the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's annual assessment of Indian Point.
Eleven thousand jobs created by a power plant. Eighteen million lives affected in the New York metro area by its demise. Those were the main numbers the protestors – of which there were many at Thursday night's annual public hearing on Indian Point – were throwing around. The protestors were louder, or least more organized, than the pro-nuclear folks. They were also more colorful. There were the Raging Grannies with their purposely frumpy clothes and song (a gimmick, admitted one, but anything to get the message heard). Some Japanese people wore hazmat suits emblazoned with red nuclear symbols, a powerful reminder of the Fukushima disaster and the fact that Japan's gone fully non-nuclear since. As of two weeks ago, the country closed its…

The recall is nationwide.
Thousands of crib tents sold by several major retailers are being recalled due to a "serious safety risk," state and federal officials said Thursday. The state Department of Consumer Protection is alerting consumers about a nationwide voluntary recall announced by The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and five major retailers. Refunds will be made available to consumers who have purchased any of the recalled crib tents or play yard tents made by Tots in Mind, Inc., officials said. According to CPSC, infants and toddlers are at risk of serious injury or death due to strangulation and entrapment by the products, and agency officials are urging parents and caregivers to stop using these crib tents and play yard tents immediately. Do not…

Longtime Bronxville hardware store fades into history books.
The sign in the window in recent months read something to the effect of “Andre’s Hardware is committed to serving the Bronxville Community for many years to come”. Unfortunately, the community may not have been as committed to Andre’s, and the venerable Kraft Avenue anchor closed shop over the weekend. When we first moved to Bronxville several years ago, Andre’s was a frequent stop, as we picked up paints, cleaners, electrical supplies, and more for our newly purchased home. Walking into the shop – a motion sensing frog croaking customers’ arrivals, that hardware store scent – a mixture of fertilizer, sawdust, and freshly made keys – filled the air. Although it’s an overused cliché, walking into Andre’s was a bit like stepping back …

Are you throwing a Memorial Day gathering? Where will you be going for all your fresh meats, cheese, salads and fruit?
Memorial Day is the official start of summer, when families flock to boardwalks that are resplendent with blinking lights and thrill inspiring rides; the sky is alive with the thunderous popping and crackling of massive fireworks shows and the memory of soldiers who have sacrificed for our freedom is honored. But it wouldn't feel like a real Memorial Day without the obligatory cookout or picnic in the park with friends and family, as a way to usher in the warmer months. So, this week's Reader's Choice poll asks where you'll be buying the food for your event? If you see a place in Eastchester, Bronxville or Tuckahoe that was left off the list, be sure and add it in the comments section below. Let Patch save you time. Get great local …
