Six Things to Do Over Labor Day Weekend

From festivals to free concerts, here’s your list of long weekend must-dos.

 

If you're looking to stay local this Labor Day weekend, there are lots of events going on in and around the County. In just a short drive from the communities you can do learn about Native American traditions, go antiquing and hang with the Cat in the Hat. So before you put away the sandals and get the kids ready for school, here's a list of goings-on this weekend.

 

What: Outdoor Movie Night

Where: Depot Square, Tuckahoe

When: September 2, 7:30 p.m.

Details: Kick off Labor Day weekend by watching the Roberto Benigni-directed movie The Tiger and the Snow, the last of the Westchester Italian Cultural Center's outdoor movie screenings. Bring chairs, blankets and snacks to the movie, which will be shown in Italian with English subtitles. The Tap House is also offering a $28, 3-course prix-fix menu before the show.

What: Cat in the Hat Celebration

Where: Bronx Zoo

When: September 4-6, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Details: In honor of the premiere of The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! on PBS, the Zoo is hosting a variety of activities including scavenger hunts, readings, Cat in the Hat visits and a screening of the premiere episode.

Cost: free with the price of admission: adult $16, child, $12, Kids under-2, free

What: Fresh peaches, strawberries, and apples oh my!

Where: Stuart's Fruit Farm and Orchards, Granite Springs

When: September 4 - November

Details: This weekend marks the farm's grand opening for the fall season. From 10:00 a.m. until 5 p.m., you can sample baked items like apple cider donuts and pick various farm fresh fruits. The farm is about a 40-minute car ride from Bronxville.

What: 26th Annual Labor Day Antique's Fair Somers, NY

Where: Lasdon Park, Arboretum & Veterans Memorial Rt 35, Somers

When: September 6, 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.

Details: Close to 70 dealers will be selling a variety of antiques—from vintage books and bracelets to maps, home goods and clothing. You'll also find live music by Gary Dillon, food and more.

Cost: Adults $7, children13 and under, free

What: Jazz and Blues at Dusk

Where: Waterfront Amphitheater, end of Main Street, Yonkers

When: September 3, 6:30 – 8 p.m.

Details: The Yonkers Jazz and Blue at Dusk concert series which has been going on since July wraps up on Friday evening with a performance by the Maciek Schlejbal Quartet.

What: Green Corn Festival

Where: Philipsburg Manor, Sleepy Hollow

When: September 4 – 6, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Details: Learn more about local Native American culture at this all-day event, which includes cooking demos, stories, arts and crafts, music and more. Experts will also be on hand for live demonstrations.

Cost: Members are free, Adults, $12; Children ages 5 – 17, $6; Kids under 5, free.
