Pelham Manor Woman Provides Life Management Assistance

Lambent Services provides high-caliber personal assistants for clients in the tri-state area.

Shudder at the thought of assembling receipts for your taxes? Too tired at the end of the day after work to run errands?

Well, Lambent Services may have the solution.

Jill Glist, a Pelham Manor resident and a working mother of two, got the idea for starting the company after borrowing one of her children’s babysitters once a week.

“Never mind the kids, I needed help,” Glist admitted during a recent phone interview.

Realizing how much she accomplished during those six hours, Glist opened Lambent Services New York in 2006 to supply personal assistants for clients' homes, offices or home offices.

The company recently opened a second location in Yonkers. “There’s a real need in this area,” she said. The increase in Westchester clients plus new additional business from Greenwich (Connecticut) and New Jersey meant paying (assistants) for travel time.

For years Glist had personal assistants helping her run the household.

“I never thought of starting a business,” Glist said. “I was taught to buy things, not sell them.”

Assistants are college-educated and undergo a rigorous interview process and a thorough background check.

“The current economy gives us access to amazingly qualified people who are interested and available to work,” she said.

During the prescreening process, applicants are asked to check from a list all the possible skills they have.

“They never clean or take care of children,” said Glist, whose children are now 9 and 11. “We also do learn about each person’s personality type and are very focused on the quality of the match between the client and the assistant.”

Lambent Services employees are an elite group of intelligent, motivated, and personable individuals and top university graduates who help make clients’ lives run more smoothly.

"Everyone needs some personal help, and the best person to get it from is someone who is efficient and intelligent,” Glist said. “Many tasks are what you don’t want to do at home or do at all.”

New clients are asked what he or she wants from an assistant, and then Lambent Services contacts the assistant – who is an independent contractor - to check his or her interest in the assignment, the way a temporary employment agency functions for clients.

“What I’m trying to do is bring this concept to the attention of potential clients who would use them and to provide ongoing support and reach a different demographic,” Glist said.

Assistants are paid by hour and have varied professional backgrounds including media, law, health, publishing, accounting and marketing. A potential client is assessed for his or her needs, preferred personalities and working schedules, after which he or she receives dossiers for three personal assistants to review.

With higher expectations these days, Glist said, “Everyone is doing so much and trying to be good parents, they wear themselves out so a personal assistant is a welcome help.”
