Remember to send in your results and pictures to see them in the Daily Sports Digest

The Westchester Community College Vikings were named co-winners of the Mid-Hudson Conference all-sports award, along with Orange County CC. The award goes to the school that did the best in conference play in all sports combined. The Vikings finished tied for first in baseball, third in softball, fourth in golf, won the women’s basketball championship and finished second in men’s basketball. The Vikings also finished second in Volleyball and soccer.

Pelham Falcons Finish Season Strong

The Pelham Falcons tied the Rye Brook Sharks after defeating the Castleford Emerald to finish the season at 5-3-2, going unbeaten in their last five games.

The Falcons put together perhaps their best match of the season in outscoring Castleford, 7-2, with John Carew registering four goals, Jon Girolamo two, and Ben Glickman connecting on a spectacular free kick from 25 yards out.

The second Pelham goal epitomized the game and the type of soccer the boys were playing at the end of this season. Girolamo’s shot forced a save by the Castleford keeper. Sol Boon knocked the ball back to Grant Ultom who worked it to Carew, who then connected with Girolamo back at the top of the box. This time Girolamo finished with a top corner blast on a goal that featured crisp passing.

The Falcons’ stingy defense made it tough for Castleford to get into the game, with goalkeeper Bennett Safsel making some key stops in the first half. Peter Fontanella was composed at right back, winning the ball and working it up the wing to send the Falcons into attack. Sweeper Cris Moore and left back Patrick Zahradnik made double goal-line clearances near the end of the first half and worked all match to stifle the Castleford strikers.

Against the division-leading Sharks, the Falcons gave up a goal when they didn’t clear their lines on a counter attack. The Sharks scored again just a couple minutes later, leaving the Falcons in a deep hole against a team that had won eight and tied one this season.

Pelham, however, showed resolve and began to demonstrate the kind of passing that saw them win their last four games. With little time left, Girolamo won a free kick outside the box after a dangerous run. Glickman stepped up and buried the shot to secure the draw.
