About Town: Cure the Winter Blues
Arts, Comedy, and Film Abound this Week in Bronxville
January, even without snow, is pretty bleak. We tend to trudge through these grey winter days, looking for a little light, a little warmth, a little laughter to get us through until spring. We had one of these discoveries on Saturday, when we stopped by the Bronxville Library, and were surprised to discover a wonderful photography exhibit downstairs.
Steve Galante’s landscape photography is understated but vivid and heartfelt. The nine pieces on display (about half of which have already been sold) are worth a few minutes of your time to peruse before you head back into the cold.
Another respite from the winter doldrums comes this Thursday at Fogarty’s, where The Eastchester/Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce will host a dinner and comedy show featuring three top notch comics from our area – Dr. Harry Freedman, Eric Haft, and Chris Monty. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., followed by the show at 8 p.m.. Tickets are $55 each, which includes dinner and the show and a cash bar will be available. You can purchase tickets online at www.eastchestertuckahoechamberofcommerce.com.
Tickets may also be available at the door for $65, but why wait? Stand-up comedy right here in Bronxville? It beats tourists and $12 Bud Lights at Caroline’s in the city.
Not a stand-up comedy fan? That's odd, but if classic movies are more your thing, The Friends of the Bronxville Public Library kick off another film festival on Saturday Jan. 21 featuring the directing career of the legendary Elia Kazan.
At 2 p.m., they’ll screen “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”, starring Dorothy McGuire, Joan Blondell, and Lloyd Nolan. And it only gets better from there – on Feb. 18, the festival continues with Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront”, one of our personal faves.
So don’t get too deep into your winter blues – there are lots of great opportunities to shake them off, and if you don’t take advantage, we’ll scold you in our best Brando, “You don't understand. You coulda had class. You coulda been a contender. You coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what you are.”
Have a great week, folks.
